The Accoyo Story
Don Julio Barreda
The Accoyo Farm
The Altiplano

Why breed with Accoyo males? Champions are bred from Accoyos, that is why.  In Australia, the alpaca from Don Julio Barreda's Accoyo Farm have more than proven their worth.  Among the first Accoyos imported to Australia were Highlander, Inti, Ledger's Dream and El Dorado.  From those males have come hundreds of champions and supreme champions.

The success of the Accoyos in Australia has only become more pronounced since those famous males made it through quarantine.  In fact, the last three suri Supreme Champions at the National Show have been full Accoyo animals.  The last five have either been Accoyo or come from an Accoyo sire.  In 2008, both the huacaya and suri champions were full Accoyo.

So what has made the Accoyo animals so successful?  To answer that question, it becomes necessary to understand the history of these fantastic creatures.

Don Julio Barreda, (1919-2006) spent his entire life breeding alpaca in one of the world's harshest environments.  His Accoyo farm was some 15000 feet above sea level, and as such, only the strongest, densest animals could survive.  Don Julio was the first of the "Camayocc" to introduce fencing.  To others, creating barriers for the alpaca in their vast open land seemed useless and time consuming.  Don Julio believed that these fenced areas would support more animals by rotating pasture space.  This concept quickly paid off with a lower mortality rate for crias.  Each year his alpaca's health and fertility levels steadily progressed to higher levels.  In addition to these benefits, Don Julio quickly put an end to the open breeding of Suri and Huacaya.  For the first time he was now creating a truly purebred herd of alpacas.  Today his ACCOYO line is known for superior genetics from years of culling and retaining only the animals with the highest fleece quantity, fineness, elegance and perfect confirmation. If his alpacas did not produce at least six pounds of fleece in their first year, they were sold.  The second year they had to produce 10 pounds in order to remain in the ACCOYO herd.

Fifty years of this consistency has today produced an alpaca that shears 10 pounds of fleece annually with no more than 24 microns.  His entire herd of only 2,500 animals compares to larger operations in Peru of 60,000 had a look no other "Camayocc" could produce or compete with.  Each animal looked remarkably alike in almost every way with the trademark head, large square stature, and thick fine fleece.  During the early days of importation those few breeders that knew of this elite herd with superior genotype were lucky enough to purchase a small number of quality females and stud males direct from the ACCOYO ranch for their own farms here in Australia.

Here at Shahrizai, we have seen the benefits from breeding with Accoyo sires.  That is why we have brought in these amazing genetics to improve the quality of our females.  Standing at Shahrizai right now are
ILR NGG Bentley, a half-Accoyo full suri male out of the famous ILR Duranzo, one of the first Accoyo males imported to the US, Surilana Oliver, a half-Accoyo male out of Surilana T-Pito, and Surilana Marshall ET, a full-Accoyo male out of two of Surilana's best Accoyos, Surilana Accoyo El Cordoba and Surilana Macusani Madonna.

We are also thrilled to announce to new Accoyo additions to the Shahrizai herd.  In 2010, Surilana Macusani Master ET and Surilana Belle Boy ET will begin working.  They have all the attributes of their Accoyo ancestors, and their Australian pedigrees are very impressive.

Belle Boy, IAR 143043, is a full-Accoyo boy out of two amazing animals.  His sire, Surilana T-Pito, was an imported Peruvian male who has sired dozens of show champions.  His dam, Surilana Macusani Ma Belle, even more impressively, is also the dam of Surilana Accoyo El Cordoba, Surilana Quo Vadis ET, and 2 of the last three National SUPREME Champions, Surilana Piccolo and Surilana Mr. B ET.  His pedigree could not possibly be any more impressive.

Macusani Master ET, IAR 138832, is out of the aforementioned El Cordoba, and another of Surilana’s most impressive dams.  His dam, Surilana Macusani Miss, is also the dam of Surilana Lady Columbine ET, the 2008 National SUPREME Champion.
